Sanford Siegel CV 2011
Each Year the Association of Phosphate and Fertilizer Chemists awards it’s Hero of The Industry Award to an individual within the phosphate industry whose accomplishments merit special recognition.
An individual who has demonstrated a strong commitment to helping our organization fulfill its purpose, which is to Promote uniform analytical methods and procedures for the analysis of Phosphate based products.
Over the course of his 25 years in our industry, this year’s recipient has certainly exceeded those criteria.
A native Floridian, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at Florida International University.
After graduation he was hired by the Dow Chemical Company as a Research Chemist in Midland, Michigan.
After four winters in Michigan, he and his wife decided to head south, and he transferred to the Louisiana division, where they enjoyed the good food and worked in research and support.
After 8 years in Louisiana, with a new family member on the way, they decided to move back to Florida, so their child would know his grandparents.
It is at this point, in 1986 that his career in Phosphate began. He accepted a position as laboratory Supervisor at Wingate Creek mine, then a part of the NuGulf Phosphate Company. While working at NuGulf his responsibilities expanded to include all reagent purchasing and float plant support.
From NuGulf he moved on to a position with American Cyanamid, which morphed into CYTEC during a spinoff, as the Eastern United States Sales Representative for Industrial Mining Chemicals. Using his background from NuGulf and Dow, he provided sales and technical support to silica, phosphate, and clay mines in the Southeastern United States.
His next stop was a stint in the Kaolin Industry with ECCI as a Process Engineer, but when it became apparent that ECCI was facing a downturn due to South American competition, he accepted a position with CF Industries as a Senior Research Chemist, where he hopes to spend the rest of his career.
He has been an active member of the AFPC for over twenty years, participating in both the Rock Check Sample Program and the Fertilizer Check Sample program, and he has administered the AFPC’s Rock Check Sample Program for over ten years.
He has served as Secretary/ treasurer, Vice President, President, and again as Vice President in the AFPC.
He is a well respected member of AAPFCO, IFA, and has hosted multiple Bulk Blend Workshops for the AAPFCO Best Management Practices Committee.
He’s been an active Industry Liaison member of the Lab Services Committee, a participating member of the Working Group for Phosphate Methods for IFA, and was nominated for the Steering Committee for IFA’s Technical Committee.
In addition, he has also chaired the Technology, Product, and Quality Committee for TFI at the AAPFCO meeting.
He and members of his lab developed the proposed AOAC methodology for ICP analysis of phosphoric acid, products, and rock, and I can say from personal experience that he and his team are more than willing to share their hard won knowledge and experience with this method, with anyone who is interested.
On the personal side, he enjoys fishing, gardening, reading, and spending time with his family, usually doing the previously mentioned activities.
As the President of the AFPC, it is my privilege to present our Hero of The Industry Award to Mr. Sanford Siegel
